Hapten Design and Synthesis

A hapten is a small molecule that can elicit an immune response only when attached to a large carrier such as a protein; the carrier may be one that also does not elicit an immune response by itself. Haptens are involved in the production of a number of immune responses, making them a topic of interest to immunologists, and they are also used in laboratory research and some types of immunoassay and diagnostic testing.
